Long time no see

Well let’s be honest I’m not very good at this blogging thing… I had every intention on posting a couple of updates through the winter but then I blinked and just like that, the long, cold winter was over! So here is a quick recap of all that happened. We had Christmas! Santa came it was awesome. Then we had a few birthdays to celebrate in January so we had cake and that was divine… but let’s not mention the cake to Ernie. She was a little upset because she did not get any cake on her birthday, so I guess we still owe her a cake. Then February came and it snowed. The kids were so excited because school was canceled and they got to make a snowman! Hooray for making snowmen… but then it snowed again, and again, and again, and again. The snow would just not stop and I did not think spring would ever get here. Everyone told me that when March came things would get better but all I remember about March was it was COLD! Then April came but it did not feel like April… and it certainly did not feel like it was time to rake leaves and open camp. So we did none of those things instead we watched the snow melt. Then one day when we woke up all the snow was gone and May was here!!! So we broke out the rakes, the sun came out, some flowers were planted and now FINALLY it feels like it’s time for camping.

I don’t know about you but I am so EXCITED! We have some awesome events planned for this summer. We have some of the classic events that are too fun not to have every summer. We have a few events that we have not done in a while, and we even have a couple new things planned. It is going to be an awesome summer… Just don’t blink because you may miss the whole thing! To get things started we are having the best ice cream party ever to be had at camp. It is going to be a screaming good time so make sure you are here for Memorial Day weekend… and then you might as well just stay all summer long. I can’t wait to see everyone! And remember we are officially open May 15th (that’s next weekend... that means May is already almost half over!!!) We better get this party started. See you around the camp fire!

Kicking off Summer!

Kicking off Summer!

Summer is here! It has been great seeing everyone finally setting up camp. This is one of my favorite times of the entire year. Birds are chirping, flowers are blooming, children are laughing, and everyone is smiling. Everything is starting to come back to life and the sun feels amazing!!!! What is your favorite part about this time of year? Let us know by leaving a comment on our blog.

The store has been moved into its new location at the rec hall. We will no longer be preparing food throughout the day, but still have drinks, food, and other snack items. The store will continue to offer ice, propane, and gift cards. We also created a common area for all campers to use and enjoy next to the new store. We are going to be taking down the old store. We are hoping this will not take too long but please excuse our appearance while we work on cleaning this area up.

We have been updating information and photos on our website http://hemlockscamp.com/ and Facebook Please check it out and let us know what you think. Please let me (Stacey) know if you do NOT want yours or your child’s photo on the web site. We will continue to take photos of events throughout the summer and some of these photos may appear on the website or Facebook page.

BitterSweet

Bitter Sweet

This time of year is always bittersweet for all of us campers. Every weekend another camper closes up for the season, headed home to gear up for winter. It is so sad to watch as everyone packs up…. but it is also nice to watch the leaves change color on all the beautiful trees. It is very exciting to start working on new projects that will make next spring even better than the one we just had. But my favorite part (of my least favorite part of the season) is looking back on how amazing the summer has been. We really did have a wonderful summer. We tried out some new tings… like our attempt at making homemade ice cream, we may have ended up with milkshakes but we all had smiles on our faces. Next year we won’t pick the hottest day of the year to roll coffee cans back and forth, and maybe we will actually get ice cream! We had a successful obstacle course, and I have some ideas to make next year’s even better. Halloween was spooky as ever. It may have rained and we may have gotten wet but at the end of the weekend our hunted hay ride was a success. Jackson has not stopped talking about it! He wanted to know why we had to take it all down; he thinks we should keep it up and do it again on real Halloween. He has some great ideas for next year, and cannot wait for fake Halloween. I’m starting to think he likes fake Halloween more than real Halloween. My favorite event of the summer was the kid’s carnival. We have never had so many compliments on an event! It was great to see all the kids playing games, and to have all the adults involved. Over all the summer was a hit, and all this talk is getting me excited about planning everything for next summer. We want to know what your favorite part of the summer was. Please share your comments below on the blog.       http://hemlockscamp.com/blog/

Winter

To tell you all the truth I have never been winters biggest fan. It is cold and dark… I’d rather be hibernating. I have been promised this year is going to be different. I am going to learn to snowboard. I’m not going to lie I am a little scared. Scared or not I’m going to do it… I just hope I like it. What I am really excited about is learning how to ice climb! I have recently discovered a love for rock climbing and if I can do it in the winter I’m in! I don’t think I will like any season more than summer, but for once I am looking forward to what winter has to offer. I am going to do my best to keep everyone posted through the winter on things that will be going on at camp next summer. I thought it would also be fun to share our winter stories. Let’s not lose touch just because the snow starts falling. Feel free to leave comments on the blog or on our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/CampgroundHemlocks. Just because we are not camping does not mean we can’t have fun. We hope all of you enjoy your winter, and if you plan on hibernating just remember spring and summer are right around the corner. We can’t wait to see everyone next year, and hope you share some fun winter stories!

"Roughing It"

Roughing It

Growing up every summer our family, like most others, looked forward to going on vacation. Vacation = Camping!!! And this meant we got to spend all day in the water swimming and fishing, and then we stayed up late to roast s’mores. It was the best time, and now these times are some of my best memories. Even when we were sleeping in the tent and woke up in a puddle of water, got food poisoning, and “lost” my brother. We had so much fun. After years of sleeping on the ground, we got our first camper!! I will never forget those blue, purple, and green striped curtains. We woke up dry, had heat, and running water. Now this was a big step up from the tent that never seemed to keep the rain out. As the years passed and as we got older, camping (even in the camper) just did not have the same appeal, but every year mom would pack all our stuff and dad would somehow manage to get it all to fit in the van and we would go camping.

Our very first year camping at Hemlocks Campground… well let’s just say I was not the happiest of campers. Not even my dad’s famous blueberry pancakes could get me out of my funk. At this point I was a teenager and my parents dragged me off to the middle of nowhere so we could go “roughing it” (In

a camper with AC, heat, running water and electricity to power my cell phone). I was miserable. My dad said “get out of the camper and go make some friends” but I had friends so many my phone did not stop ringing… until my dad threw it in the fire. I decided maybe making new friends was not such a bad idea. I made a few friends before the week was over, and I do have a few great memories from that trip. When we got home my parents talked about how friendly everyone was and how much they wanted to go back. Well, we took two vacations that year and then we were hooked. The next summer we became seasonal campers. The people we have met here are now like our family. Every year our camp family changes, some members leave. and sometimes we gain new members we did not realize we had. Like every family we have our ups and downs but those just make us stronger.   Camping is not like it used to be, but we always seem to have the best time when we are “roughing it”. What are some of your favorite memories of your family camping trips? Do you think camping needs to go back to the basics, or do you think all the ammonites have made it better?

We would love to hear you thoughts! Please add your comments to our blog.

Summer’s Events

Time flies when you’re having fun! Can you believe how fast the summer is going? We have been having so much fun racing in the obstacle course, hopping around with the

Easter bunny, and getting catch of the

day during the fishing derby. Now it’s time to kick off July with Beach day. This Month is going to be so much fun!! We have some new events planned and we are bringing back some old favorites. Make sure you check out the events schedule so you don’t miss out on anything. If there is an event you would like to help out with please let me (Stacey know). For every  one who has helped thank you very much!!!

Lets hop to it...

What a fantastic weekend!!! The Easter bunny hopped all the way over to Hemlocks Campground to spend the afternoon with us. That tricky Easter bunny hid all kids of eggs for us to find. He even hid a golden egg with $20.00 can you believe it!!! That Easter bunny sure was a lot of fun, he hopped all over the campground with us. He said next year he was going to come back with even more Easter eggs. I’m sure glad that Easter bunny loves camping as much as we do. We also got a small fire going on the beach to make s’mores. We had all kinds of s’mores! We even told spooky stories. We were not scared because we are brave little campers! Campfires on the beach are the best.

Father’s day was a beautiful day for a BBQ. It was nice to walk around and see everyone with their dads. We were so glad to see so many people creating memories and having fun. We are looking forward to next weekend. This is turning out to be a great summer!

Camping never goes out of style

Welcome Back!

Well the 2013 season is off to a great start!!! We are very excited about the launch of our new web site hemlockscamp.com Please check it out and let us know what you think. We will be updating the blog and adding an events photo gallery. Please let me (Stacey) know if you do NOT want yours or your child’s photo on the web site.

You may have noticed over the winter we had some of the larger trees removed. This was just some preventative maintenance done in case of a large storm.  Please forgive us for our appearance as we work on getting all the brush, stumps, and roots removed.

Memorial Day weekend may have been a little wet but we still had a good time. The rain stopped in time for our scavenger hunt on Saturday. The girls beat the boys but everyone enjoyed ice cream. We made s’mores in the rain and had a blast finding lollipops. The sun did finally come out on Monday and it was great to see everyone out and about enjoying the sun.

We have some other great events planned for this summer please check out our web site for a complete list. Happy Camping everyone!
